Image shows road closure for Chapel Road Culvert Improvement Project. During construction, Chapel Road will be closed between Black Dog Alley and Gannon Road. Wootenaux Creek Infrastructure Improvement
Talbot County Department of Public Works will replace the culvert beneath Chapel Road at Wootenaux Creek in Easton to improve roadway safety and drainage capacity.
The project will require a temporary closure of Chapel Road between Black Dog Alley and Gannon Road while crews remove the existing culvert and install a new structure designed to support long-term roadway stability.
Due to environmental regulations, the project will utilize a bottomless culvert, which preserves the natural stream channel and aquatic habitat but requires a longer construction timeline. This design will also reduce long-term maintenance by minimizing clogging from debris and will improve roadway safety through the addition of guardrails along the corridor.

May 15 Steel sheet piling is being installed to safely contain the work area as crews replace the aging culvert crossing and improve drainage infrastructure.
May 15 A new drainage pipe and stone stabilization are being installed to help improve water flow and protect the streambank from erosion.
May 15 Crews use specialized pile-driving equipment to install steel supports that keep the construction area secure during excavation work.
May 15 Environmental protection measures, including floating sediment barriers, help keep nearby waterways clean while construction is underway.

Crews have completed the installation of the bypass system, and water from the stream is now being temporarily diverted around the culvert work area. Work is currently underway on the installation of a sheet pile cofferdam to dewater the construction area.
The removal of the three existing culverts and installation of the footing and piles for the new bottomless arch culvert are scheduled for the next few weeks.

The Chapel Road Culvert Project continues to move forward as crews prepare for the next phase of construction. The team is currently working to set up the bypass system needed to safely divert the stream during construction. This step is critical to maintaining water flow while allowing work on the culvert to proceed. Road-related construction activities are expected to begin shortly as the project transitions into more visible on-site work.
